Bonneville Speed Week attracts gearheads from around the world to a dried up lake bed, covered with a crust of salt, in attempt to break world land speed records.
It was opening day of the year, 2016. Snow was still visible on the side of the pavement and course workers were eagerly clearing the track to prepare for the day’s test and set up session.
Explore the Paddock with Ryan Lowry and see the vintage races through his eyes with this detail-oriented photoset. Shot on a Hasselblad 500C medium format film camera for that "period-correct" feel.
Automotive enthusiasts from around the world are familiar with the United States' second oldest motorsport event to the Indianapolis 500, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. This race to the clouds has championed the bravest drivers and quickest land vehicles since 1916, and this year, the 96th annual hill climb welcomed a new king of the hill, Romain Dumas.
The DR30 checks all the right boxes for any JDM car enthusiast: a turbocharged 4-cylinder, rear wheel drive, 5-speed manual, right hand drive, and only available in Japan. Compounding the desirability, this particular car is 1 of 400 Anniversary Editions ever made, commemorating Nissan's 50th Anniversary.
The crisp December air is cold and thin, but the warm sunset glow paints a different picture. Seattle is often socked-in with clouds, so we have to take advantage of what little nice weather we do get. One of these rare days came upon us, and Daniel Piker didn't waste any time. His photo set perfectly captures the graceful lines of BMWs most iconic classics - a 1971 2002 and a 1971 2800CS.
This year marked the 10th anniversary of SoCal Vintage BMW, one of the biggest and best BMW gatherings in the country, if not the world. Interestingly, it's one of the few events that BMW and the BMW Car Club don't sponsor or organize. It's these enthusiast roots that maintain the laid-back vibes and diversity of cars, from perfect original specimen to rat rods, and everything in between.
Some cars warrant a second look, even if you can't put a finger on exactly why. This enigmatic beauty is no accident, however - it's the result of a refined vision, years of parts hunting, and most importantly, patience, without succumbing to the instant gratification of riveted-on fender flares, giant wheels, cutting springs, or a straight-piped exhaust.
My Rolex Motorsports Reunion experience started early on Sunday morning, at about 4AM. I made a last minute decision to head over to Laguna Seca and photograph the event. I’m always looking for an excuse to be behind the lens and see some beautiful vintage machines ripping around the racetrack, so this was a perfect opportunity.
Enjoy this complementary collection of high resolution wheel photographs taken at the 2017 Rolex Motorsports Reunion.
Shot entirely on film, this tasteful collection of photos perfectly captures the essence of vintage racing; while the technology may not be is as fast or precise as today's, both vintage cars and film have a character that cannot be engineered, paying homage to a simpler, analog time.
Each year over 100 classic BMWs make a trek to the Brisbane Marina, turning a quaint, San Francisco Bay park into a BMW-haven. The Bay Area 02 Swap and Show is the mecca for all things BMW 2002. Even in Germany, the motherland, there are few events that come close.
Seattle-native Matt LaCross has been creating continuous-line ink drawings more than twenty years. His masterpieces are composed from a single thought, with one consistent flow of ink and no preliminary sketches. Once the pen meets paper, it's not lifted until the piece is complete.
The first time I went to Racecraft I drove right by it. Actually, I drove by it three times. The building has no flashy signage or exotic cars to garner attention. Only a casually parked BMW M3 indicated that maybe this was the place I was looking for. The shop maintains a low profile, but once you are inside you understand exactly why.
Yes, you read that right. This is the only Felony Form E36 sedan in the world. Prototype #001.
One of the best-kept secrets of car events is the regular parking lot. While concours always have "so clean you could eat off the underside" cars, enthusiastic attendees often bring something special as well, only to get relinquished to the back lot.
Ok, so it wasn't exactly a "barn find," but "transmission shop find" doesn't have quite the same ring to it. This jewel of a BMW was dropped off for a transmission rebuild when the owner moved to Alaska and simply abandoned his car at the mechanic. The project stalled, and the car was left in the back corner of the shop for years.
After sun-baking in a field for years, this 1991 Porsche Carrera 4 was rescued and given a new chance at life.

The Bay Area '02 Swap and Show attracts BMW 2002s from all over California. Hosted at the Brisbane Marina on the San Francisco Bay, there are few better backdrops to host a classic car gathering.
Recently imported from France, this 1964 BMW 1800 was found hidden amongst the campsites at Laguna Seca Raceway during the 2016 Historics. Covered in early morning dew, the car couldn't have been more photogenic.
When I think of a car museum, I picture rows upon rows of 1930-1960s American cars that begin to all look the same. That is exactly what the Petersen is not. The Petersen Automotive Museum, located in Los Angeles, CA is one of the most diverse collections of cars anywhere on the planet.
It was a typical dark and rainy day in Seattle, but you can't expect anything more from February. Luckily, 10+ 2002s and their owners were not perturbed, because the mood was light.
Where do you go to satisfy your BMW fan-boy itch when Munich and the European Delivery experience are simply out of the question?
When the owner first tossed me the keys, I wasn't sure what to expect. Coming from classic cars, my idea of the perfect driving experience involves a connectedness that you can only get from analog features - manual steering, a manual gearbox, and the likes.
The 1986-1991 BMW 325iX is a rare bird. Built at the end of the legendary E30 body style production run, the 325iX took the already successful platform and added a viscous-coupling, Audi-slaying, all-wheel-drive system.
Even after attending for three years in a row, SoCal Vintage never ceases to bring a smile to my face the second I pull in. Hosted at Woodley Park in Van Nuys, just outside of Los Angeles, SoCal Vintage is the mecca for classic BMWs - most from the 70s and 80s.
