This 1974 BMW Bavaria is in remarkable shape. With just 68k miles on the odometer, the condition is commensurate with the miles. Every panel features original Chamonix white paint with consistent panel-gaps, while the original blue interior is nearly flawless. The car is 100% stock, except for a pair of newly-installed Weber 32/36 carburetors, utilizing the factory air cleaner for a stock look. The car has been garaged and babied, only being driven on nice days - it has to be one of the most rust-free Bavarias in existence, just look at the underside photos. While in great condition, a professional detail would bring this car to the next level.
This Bavaria is an original California car with paperwork and the original blue plates to back it up. All body panels have original paint, zero rust, and have never been removed or replaced. If you had to describe the car in one word, it would be "honest." There are a few small door dings that could be removed with paintless dent repair, but they're not particularly noticeable or significant. Interestingly, as seen on old BMWs from time to time, the car features an original "Sahara" beige paint sticker, even though the car is Chamonix white. This is usually attributed to careless BMW factory workers, perhaps on a Friday afternoon after a "bier" or two. The car has always been garaged under the current owners care-taking period.
The odometer reads 68,000 and the condition suggests this is the original mileage, but as with any 5-digit odometer, there is no way to know if it has rolled over. The classic blue interior is in fantastic, 100% original condition. Under the dealer-option floor mats, the original carpets are in pristine condition, with no wear marks or significant discoloration. The front seat bottom vinyl has split, but they are in otherwise proper, functioning condition. The rear seats are in excellent condition. The original door panels are also in great condition, minus a couple small marks, commensurate with a 40+ year old car. Incredibly, the dash has zero cracks, and the wood trim is in perfect condition. The car has never been smoked in, and the super clean, bright-white headliner confirms this. The center console houses the dealer-option Blaupunkt radio and air conditioner (untested). Like the rest of the car, the trunk is very clean and unmolested. The car retains its original, unused spare tire and the complete, original toolkit.
The car drives straight, smooth, and tight. On a twisty canyon road, or through the city for a classy date, this Bavaria is an incredible cruiser. The car has stock suspension paired with the optional alloy wheels and brand new tires (less than 100 miles on the tires). Like most old cars, it blows a little smoke and minutely leaks oil (a drop every few weeks), but nothing out of the ordinary.
The M30 motor runs great with the smooth-shifting original automatic transmission. The current owner removed the smog equipment and Zenith carburetors in favor or a more powerful, reliable, and tunable dual-weber 32/36 setup. The original carburetors and smog equipment are included in the sale. Along with the new carburetors, new fuel lines and water lines were installed. New muffler hangers were installed, and the car just had an oil change. The meticulous original owner kept a logbook of gas fill ups and mileage, which will be included in the sale.
On a recent drive, the brake pedal a little felt soft and needed to be pumped to regain pressure. This has not been diagnosed, but should be an easy fix. It has only happened once, but it should be mentioned.
Since these photos have been taken, the underside has been degreased and cleaned. The Bavaria is as clean underneath as it is above, with zero rust.
This Bavaria is an excellent cruiser and one of the nicest examples in the world. After fixing a few minor imperfections and a good detailing, the car would be a show stopper. As it sits today, the car is an excellent, honest example of a BMW Bavaria, and would be a great addition to any garage or collection.
